The new year is a great time to reset. We broke down 5 easy-to-follow steps to help you transition to a more intentional and sustainable wardrobe.
1. Sort & Organize
Separate out the items that you no longer wear into piles to donate, recycle, or resell. In another pile, set aside the items that you plan to keep, but that need to be repaired or tailored before wearing again. Keep the remaining pieces organized, and visible, in your closet so you can maximize the wear of everything you own.
2. Repair Wear and Tear
Take a second look before throwing away a sweater with a hole, a pair of shoes that are damaged, or a jacket that no longer fits. The small investment (both time and money) in repairing an item instead of throwing it away can add years to its life, and is beneficial to both the planet and your wallet.
3. Donate - Recycle - Resell
Return to your donate, recycle, and resell pile and decide if you want to put the time and effort into reselling any items that were a larger investment or are in really great condition. Find an organization to recycle or donate the remaining items that you are not reselling. We encourage you to use a program that will recycle your clothing, but donating to a local organization is a good alternative.
4. Fewer, Better
Your goal is to begin purchasing fewer items that are of better quality. With the baseline you've already built from the pieces you own, new items that you add to your wardrobe should be able to last multiple seasons, be worn with a variety of outfits, and withstand 20+ wears.
5. Shop with Intention
Do your research before making a purchase, including looking into the option of buying the same item secondhand. If you are purchasing an item that is new, find out a few pieces of key information about the brand so you are confident you are supporting a responsible brand. Are they transparent about their supply chain? Do they use sustainable materials? Are they empowering women or marginalized communities?
